A year ago, when the high-profile case against former International Biathlon Union (IBU) president Anders Besseberg had just begun, the then-director of Transparency International Russia, Ilia Shumanov, testified<\/a> in the Norwegian court. He explained the details of the corruption climate in Russia and described the complex ties between Anders Besseberg and Russian sports officials. Case materials indicated that Besseberg received luxury watches as gifts, paid for hunting trips in Russia and Europe, and used the services of sex workers\u2014all funded by Russian sports officials and their partners.<\/p>\n

On 12 April 2024, the court found Besseberg guilty of receiving multiple bribes under aggravating circumstances and sentenced him to three years and one month in prison.<\/p>\n

However, the story did not end there.<\/strong> Besseberg disagreed with the verdict and filed an appeal<\/a>. The court once again required an independent anti-corruption expert assessment, and this request was again addressed to TI-Russia. Our organisation was represented in the Norwegian court by Executive Director Alyona Vandysheva<\/strong>, who provided the court with an expanded analysis of Russian legislation and additional clarifications regarding the interaction practices between Russian officials and international organisations.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI am convinced that real progress in anti-corruption can only be achieved through cooperation between European judicial institutions and civil society\u2014both within Russia itself and in exile. There should be no room for impunity in the investigation of corruption crimes: everyone involved must be held accountable, regardless of their status, the location of the offence, or local traditions<\/strong>. At Transparency International Russia, we are always open to cooperation and ready to share our understanding of the Russian context and anti-corruption tools wherever this can help restore justice and protect those who suffer as a result of violations of the principles of transparency and accountability,\u201d noted Vandysheva.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
